Founded in 1998 by brothers Shannon Leto and Jared Leto, 30 Seconds to Mars began as a small family project. Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After working with a number of guitarists (as the band’s first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Miličević to round out the band’s roster.

Jared Leto said the following in an interview regarding the name of the band:

“”For us, the name 30 Seconds To Mars has little to do with space, the universe or anything like that. It is a name that works on several different levels. Most importantly, it is a good representation of our sound. It’s a phrase that is lyrical, suggestive, cinematic, and filled with immediacy. It has some sense of otherness to it. The concept of space is so overwhelming and all encompassing I doubt there is a song written that doesn’t fall within it.” [1]

Shannon Leto said the following in an interview regarding the name of the band:

“”It represents a lot of things. This professor had a thesis. It was talking about where technology was going; the evolution of man and how that plays a role. A sub-category was 30 Seconds To Mars. It was like the exponential growth of humans. We are literally 30 seconds away from Mars. Everything is right here and right now; everything is just so crazy and fast.” [2]

According to an interview from Virgin Records, former member Matt Wachter said:

“[The band’s name] actually comes from a thesis that the band found online that was written by a former Harvard professor. And one of the subsections of the thesis was titled ‘thirty seconds to mars’ and he goes on to talk about the exponential growth of technology that relates to humans and saying that we are quite literally thirty seconds to mars. What it means to us is, we thought it best described our music, in short.”[3]

Even though Jared Leto is a Hollywood actor, he prefers not to use this position to promote the band; in fact, he refuses to play at venues if they have used his name to promote the band.[4]

Debut album (2002—2005)

The band’s debut self-titled album, produced by Bob Ezrin was released in 2002 to mixed reviews. The album produced two singles, “Capricorn (A Brand New Name)” and “Edge of the Earth”. The former peaked at #31 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart.[5]

A Beautiful Lie (2005—2008)

Their second album, A Beautiful Lie, was released on August 30, 2005. Because the album was leaked five months before its release, the band decided to include two bonus tracks: “Battle of One” (an original song that was also set to be the album’s title track when it was first announced) and “Hunter” (a cover of the Björk song). To further promote the album, the band also enclosed “golden tickets” in 12 copies, which granted their owners access to any 30 Seconds to Mars concert free of charge, along with backstage access.

On August 31, 2006, the band won the MTV2 Award for “The Kill” at the MTV Video Music Awards, one of their two nominations. The second nomination was for Best Rock Video; however, they lost to AFI‘s “Miss Murder“. In the video, members of the band reenact scenes from The Shining. A Beautiful Lie was certified platinum by the RIAA in January for distribution of over one million albums.[6]

In 2006, while on the MTVu $2 Bill Tour, the band did a signing with Music Saves Lives, drawing people to the importance of the non-profit.

In October, the band began their “Welcome to the Universe” tour, sponsored by MTV2 and were supported by Head Automatica, The Receiving End of Sirens, Cobra Starship, Rock Kills Kid, and several other bands including Street Drum Corps. The tour was “environmentally sound” according to a 2006 interview with then-bassist Matt Wachter. “Jared and Shannon put together this thing called Environmentour which is illustrating ways—alternatives—to kind of clean up some of the mess we leave behind. We fueled the bus with vegetable oil,” he explains.[7] On November 20, MTV2 premiered the video for “From Yesterday“; the video is the first American rock video ever shot in its entirety in the People’s Republic of China.[8] The music video is loosely based on the film The Last Emperor.

On April 29, 2007, the band performed at the Australian MTV Australia Video Music Awards, where they were nominated for three awards, winning “Best Rock Video” and “Video of the Year” for “The Kill”.

As of Spring 2007, the band is supporting The Used as a part of the “Taste of Chaos” tour and have scheduled a string of dates in Europe supporting Linkin Park. They are also scheduled to play Roskilde, Rock am Ring, Pinkpop, Give It A Name Festival and Download. 30 Seconds to Mars were one of the hosts for the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008. While on the 2007 Taste of Chaos the band also did an interview with Music Saves Lives.

On March 21, 2008, 30 Seconds to Mars performed at ‘My Coke Fest’ in South Africa, which saw the band back on South African soil since the inception and recording of A Beautiful Lie. At a Press Conference Leto described the experience as deeply personal, with the added hope that some new material may see the light of day on African Soil. The band played to a sold-out crowd in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

On December 11, 2009, according to AOL Radio Blog, with votes from listeners of the site’s Alternative Radio station, the Top Alternative Song of the Decade of the 2000s was 30 Seconds To Mars’ hit The Kill from 2006, which had major success, along with the album which the single appears, A Beautiful Lie.[9]

Virgin Records lawsuit (2008)

In August 2008, Virgin Records filed a $30 million lawsuit, claiming the band refused to deliver three albums as required by its contract. According to the lawsuit, the band “repudiated” a 1999 contract in July.[10] In an early 2009 interview with MTV, Jared said that they hope to have their third album out by summer 2009, and he also gave information about the meaning behind the record saying, “I think this record is about faith, about spiritual matters, and that just happens to be what we’re thinking about and talking about in our lives right now. I said when the last album came out that I wanted to destroy the first record, which I think we did. We took a dramatic turn from the first to the second, and I think this new record follows that path. It’s exciting to us, and we’re really passionate about it.”

Boys Like Girls didn’t have to look far for inspiration when it came time to record Love Drunk, the long-awaited follow-up to their self-titled Columbia Records debut. After spending three years on the road in support of Boys Like Girls – which has sold more than 700,000 copies to date, is certified gold by the RIAA, and spawned the top ten Top 40 radio hit “The Great Escape” – the four friends from Boston knew how much they’d progressed as a band, and they credit a lot of that growth to their fans.

“Being able to play your songs almost every night for three years straight, you notice that they’re morphing into different interpretations, and bits and pieces are changing as you progress as a band,” says front-man Martin Johnson of his band’s evolution since the release of their debut in August 2006. “When we came into the studio and started banging this new record out, it was like second nature to us. We didn’t want to write an album that was the same as our first record, but we still wanted to do something that would be fun and different and cool, and stay totally locked in with our fans because they’ve been here for us since the beginning and allowed us to evolve with them. They are the most important thing to us.”

So Boys Like Girls did what they do best, embracing the same dynamic in the studio that has become a trademark of their live shows. It started with the songs but ended with the performances. In a day-and-age where technology rules and albums can be recorded with the press of a button and the loop of a sample, Johnson, guitarist Paul DiGiovanni, bassist Brian Donahue and drummer John Keefe wanted to capture their essence as a band, making spontaneity more important than pristine over-processing.

It’s the mindset that rules their live show, and it’s the mindset that would shape Love Drunk.

“I feel like modern recording has pressed bands into this tiny little box. It’s a futuristic war against recording where you master the super-compressed record, then it compresses down to an MP3, then it compresses down to whatever else… A lot of music just isn’t sounding organic anymore,” says Johnson. “We’ve had so much fun playing together, I feel like the music has built itself into something bigger with the live show. There is a whole large spectrum of sounds that comes with this record that we’ve been really happy to explore.”

Look no further than “Love Drunk,” the album’s anthemic lead single and title track and a punchy celebration of love’s intoxicating effects: “I used to be love drunk, but now I’m hung over/ I’ll love you forever, forever is over/ We used to kiss all night, now it’s just a bar fight,” Johnson sings, the track finding an all-too-happy medium between the band’s pop-rock debut and the more electronic fashion of bands like the Killers and Franz Ferdinand.

“Heart Heart Heartbreak” ramps the arena-ready sound up another notch, the verse-chorus-guitar solo combo custom made for audience participation; and “Contagious” follows suit with a penetrating bottom-end and rich vocal harmonies, further elevating Boys Like Girls to infectious new heights. On the less raucous end of the musical spectrum, a string section helps set the tone for the tender ballad “Two Is Better Than One,” while the more mid-tempo “The First One” offers an endearing take on bouncing back from a broken heart.

Recorded between Vancouver and New York City, production duties were split between the team of S*A*M and Sluggo [Metro Station, Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes] on the east coast and Brian Howes [Puddle of Mudd, Chris Cornell, Hinder] on the west coast. The band recording half the album with each producer but with end results as seamless as the band’s infectious sound. “What was fun about this record was experimenting with new stuff, going for a vocal melody, a chord progression, or something I might not have tried on the last record because I was scared of reaching outside the boundaries. It was about doing something fun and unique and trying to find a sound that nobody had really done before, and I think we definitely opened up our boundaries quite a bit.”

Voted Spin.com’s Artist of the Year after receiving an astonishing 68% of the total vote in 2007, Boys Like Girls spent three years on the road, touring with the likes of Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne and the Vans Warped Tour and developing one of the most loyal fan bases in modern rock. After selling more than 3.0 million digital singles – including 1.5 million copies of “The Great Escape,” 900,000 copies of “Hero/Heroine” and 600,000 copies of “Thunder” – Boys Like Girls chronicled their rise from Ramen Noodles and sleeping on fans’ floors to headlining their hometown arena with the release of their first DVD in November 2008, readbetweenthelines.

“This has all been such an amazing, gradual chain of events,” recalls Johnson, the band’s principal songwriter. “I think the most amazing part of it, aside from the really humungous shows and being able to play in front of amazing crowds, was watching as the word of mouth spread in the beginning. We had yet to have exposure on the radio or anything like that, and, through touring with different bands like Cartel, Hello Goodbye and the All American Rejects, all of a sudden people were singing along to every word. Before we knew it, we had sold 100,000 records and were going to radio with ‘The Great Escape.’ It was such a crazy whirlwind to watch it all happen. Then, to be able to headline your own tour and see the reaction when you headline your hometown arena — it’s totally incredible, and I wouldn’t have done anything any other way!”

“I don’t think anybody really knows what to expect from us on this record, but I think once people hear it they are going to understand it and understand the progression we’ve made. It was hard, and there was definitely pressure, but this is a huge step for us.”

Formed in 1998 by frontman Jared Leto and his older brother, 30 Seconds to Mars found success in the 2000s with a mix of post-grunge, screamo, and hard rock. The band gained a modest audience with its debut album, but it was the platinum-selling sophomore effort A Beautiful Lie that officially opened the flood gates in 2005, securing the band a frequent presence on MTV while paving the way for a number of successful tours. By placing all-access passes into 12 copies of the album, the bandmates also showed a savvy appreciation for marketing, which they revisited several years later by putting fans’ photographs on the cover of their third album, This Is War.

Initially known for his work as an actor (most notably on the ’90s TV drama My So-Called Life, as well as movies like Requiem for a Dream and Fight Club), Jared Leto decided to flex his musical muscles as he approached his 30s. He enlisted the help of his brother, drummer Shannon Leto, and co-founded 30 Seconds to Mars in 1998. The group made its studio debut four years later, releasing a self-titled album whose post-grunge sound showed an affinity for groups like Chevelle and Incubus. Although only modestly successful, the album convinced the bandmates to continue making music in spite of Jared Leto’s busy acting schedule, which had filled up with roles in Panic Room, Highway, American Pyscho, and Requiem for a Dream.

It took three years to record A Beautiful Lie, with the bandmates traveling to four different continents to work with Leto on his movie sets. Released in 2005, A Beautiful Lie widened the band’s sound by sampling from metal, neo-prog, and screamo. It also expanded the group’s audience by going platinum in America, reaching gold status in several foreign countries, and spawning two Top 10 modern rock hits. 30 Seconds to Mars toured heavily as a result, sporting a new lineup that included lead guitarist Tomo Milicevic and bassist Matt Wachter (both of whom had also contributed to the album) in addition to the two Letos. Although Wachter threw in the towel in 2007, the band continued to tour around the world for the rest of that year, making stops at several major festivals (Roskilde, Pinkpop, Download) and opening shows for bands like the Used and Linkin Park.

Despite their growing momentum, 30 Seconds to Mars soon found themselves at war with their label, EMI/Virgin Records. The band had attempted to sign with a new label after the Beautiful Lie tour, prompting EMI to file a lawsuit for 30 million, claiming that 30 Seconds to Mars was contractually obligated to produce three more albums before signing with another company. The legal dust settled as the band relented and returned to EMI’s roster, and This Is War — the band’s third album, not to mention a stylistic return to the sound of their self-titled debut — arrived in December 2009. To encourage audience participation, the band solicited photographs from their fans, the first 2,000 of which were used to create the album’s 2,000 different covers. Andrew Leahey, Rovi

GAZA – Pasukan Israel kembali menyerang Gaza, Palestina, Rabu kemarin waktu setempat.
